If this is your first time seeking therapy, it can be difficult for a variety of reasons, including what others may be thinking of you, fear of ‘losing’ who you are, negative thinking patterns and emotions that you recognize need changing but can’t seem to let go of, or simply not knowing whether your concern is worth discussing. Whatever the case may be, receiving compassion from a therapist that is listening to more than just the story you’re telling can be very helpful, and Joshua’s safe, friendly, and professionally down-to-earth demeanor may be the fit you’re looking for!

Joshua will adapt to your unique personality traits and listen to your concerns so that you feel heard, understood, and hopeful towards understanding what you’re going through (beyond simple band-aid solutions, as many unfamiliar with the therapy process might believe). Through much schooling in counselling psychology, philosophy, and religious studies, Josh’s academic background and methodical thinking style will allow him to listen to the bigger themes that may be occurring in your life.

If you’re worried that your personality type may be ‘difficult’ to work with, then fret not! Josh has also worked extensively with many vulnerable demographics where societally ‘difficult’ personality types were the norm. These included individuals with intellectual disabilities, high-risk youth in group homes, individuals experiencing homelessness in shelters and on the streets, and those undergoing substance abuse from an inpatient treatment setting. In other words, Josh will adapt to you by drawing from his extensive social work experience as well.

Above all else, he’ll listen for the strengths and areas of hope lingering in your hurt emotions, rough experiences in life, and ongoing struggles that you may not notice in yourself… because sometimes, listening is more than just being heard.

Preferred Theoretical Frameworks
-Psychodynamic Theory
-Attachment Theory
-Cognitive-Behavioral Theory
-Person-Centered Approach
-EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
oUnder a somatic-focused lens to ensure client’s safety within their window of tolerance

Concerns Addressed
-Anxiety or other related symptoms
-Depression or mood-related difficulties
-People-pleasing and co-dependency
-Loss of meaning in life (i.e. existential concerns, reasons for living, or faith-related matters)
-Substance addictions
-Complex Trauma (i.e. various forms of abuse and post-traumatic stress)

My becoming a counsellor began with individual therapy and Al-Anon. As I worked on my family of origin issues, and the addiction-related issues in my marriage, my personal recovery began. Pursuing a master’s degree of Divinity led me to in-patient treatment with adults and adolescents, who were struggling with substance and process use disorders. Working with people at Integrity House [in New Jersey, U.S.] who were stigmatized and oppressed on many levels [genders, racialized communities, socio-economic statuses], reinforced my focus on supporting them to “step into their greatness”.

After 11 years of working in the United States, I returned to Canada, [where my family had immigrated when I was almost 5 years old], with my certification as a clinician specializing in addiction treatment. Working as a Family/Parent Counsellor with Rideauwood Addiction & Family Services for 9 years has provided me with further specialization as an ally of partners and other family members dealing with the addiction issues of their loved one.

I have developed an expertise in group and individual therapy through religious education groups, 12-Step rooms, and in-patient and community treatment programs. Academically, I have completed undergraduate degrees in psychology and sociology from Carleton University and McMaster University; MDiv. From Drew University [N.J., U.S.]; one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education [CPE Summit Hospital, N.J., U.S.]. As well, I have an ICADC [International Certification Alcohol and Drug Counselor], and I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of R.P. of Ontario. As an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, I am open to spiritual aspects of treatment and recovery when requested.

My counselling style is collaborative, and influenced by various therapeutic approaches, and a trauma-integrated awareness. My goals in therapy are supporting people in learning about and understanding their present circumstances, exploring how their past may have impacted them, and encouraging post-traumatic growth [resilience, healing, transformation, and returning to wholeness].

Joshua is a compassionate, genuine, and analytical psychotherapist that draws from psychodynamic theories (tying unconscious processes from early life to current conscious thinking) and the cognitive behavioral framework (which views thoughts as the underlying reason people experience unhelpful emotions, maladaptive behaviors, and unpleasant bodily responses).

Joshua’s previous education in counselling psychology, philosophy, and religious studies have also fostered a strong background in understanding human behaviors, critical thinking, and spirituality. He is able to effectively draw from this academic background to meet clients at their level of thinking and feeling by creating a safe and trusting atmosphere through a strong therapeutic relationship that is founded on the client’s personal beliefs and values.

Joshua also has extensive work experience with vulnerable demographics exposed to trauma and general mental health concerns (including those with intellectual disabilities, at-risk youth, individuals experiencing homelessness, and substance abuse), which brings a practical outlook to difficulties that individuals may undergo.

In turn, Joshua’s primary approach is to understand the client’s unique experiences while collaborating with the client to identify the point where certain mental health difficulties began. This means processing any lingering emotions, nurturing the client’s confidence and sense of worth in order to draw from their latent strengths and insights, and then directing these strengths towards a more effective and compassionate solution to the presenting difficulties at hand.
